Spontaneous DIY: Painting Our Farmhouse Apothecary Cabinet Black

From Rustic Farmhouse to Moody Charm: Sharing a Spontaneous DIY Makeover… 🎨⚫️🫣

Black apothecary cabinet styled in eclectic-gothic farmhouse decor with mugs and brass hardware, moody rustic wall organizer.

If you’ve followed us for a while, you know I’m a spur-of-the-moment DIYer who never seems to learn my lesson about protecting my nails, hands, clothes—or my sanity (lol). Keep reading because unfortunately for me, there's photo evidence 😬🙈💅🏻🫟

When that creative spark hits, I have to follow it right then and there or it’ll vanish faster than paint dries. This little project is the perfect example.

Before: Our Classic Farmhouse Apothecary Cabinet

Natural wood farmhouse apothecary wall cabinet with chicken-wire door and drawers before DIY black paint makeover.

We’ve always loved the natural wood tone of our Farmhouse Medicine Cabinet Organizer —it’s warm, rustic, and instantly adds farmhouse charm to any room.

This piece already has so much personality: the chicken-wire door, brass hardware, and adorable vintage apothecary-inspired drawers that make it perfect for organizing keys, mail, leashes, or mugs!

Our personal style is what I lovingly call “gothic victorian farmhouse”—a little moodier, a little edgier, but still hella cozy.

The Process: Off-the-Cuff Painting Chaos

This was one of those creative on-a-whim projects that just… happened.

I grabbed my trusty (old and crusty) open can of Glidden Premium Interior Paint + Primer in Matte Onyx Black — the exact same one I used years ago to paint our big black hutch from my gothic decor blogging days (#iykyk 🖤).

Before anyone panics — don’t worry! This is definitely not the same paint used on any of our sellable products 😂 Just a leftover can that’s lived in our creative stash for far too long.

Armed with that, a brush, and barely enough drop cloth in sight, I dove right in. My hands (and nails) paid the price, but the payoff? Totally worth it.

Details Matter: Hardware & Texture

DIY painting process of a rustic farmhouse apothecary wall cabinet using black matte paint, drawers removed, creative home makeover by Felt Creative Home Goods.

Once the paint dried, I reattached the hardware and immediately fell in love.

The gold and brass accents popped beautifully against the matte black finish, giving the cabinet that vintage apothecary-meets-modern-moody look.

Every brushstroke revealed more character, highlighting the real-wood texture and handmade craftsmanship that make each piece unique.

The Reveal: A Fresh Take on a Farmhouse Classic

Here she is—our newly painted black Farmhouse Medicine Cabinet Organizer.

It’s bold, timeless, and fits right into our eclectic-gothic-rustic home. Whether styled in a kitchen coffee nook, bathroom wall, or entryway, this piece feels like it was meant to be black.

Style It Your Way

In our own home, we mounted it on a narrow wall just across from our entryway — one of those awkward spaces that never quite worked. Now it’s both practical and pretty. We hang hats, purses, keys on the hooks, while storing sunglasses and styling the shelves with a few of our nostalgic or latest quirky decor pieces. It turned a once-forgotten corner into something eye-catching and useful.

These apothecary wall shelves are so versatile. We’ve seen customers use them:

  • As bathroom wall cabinets for towels and skincare,

  • As kitchen coffee bar shelves,

  • Or even as entryway organizers for keys, mugs, dog leashes, and mail!

Where would you use it? Tell us below in the comments👇

Should we add a black version to our Felt Creative Home Goods catalog? (We’re seriously tempted!)

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the best DIYs are the unplanned ones. A little paint, a lot of heart, and a dash of chaos later—and we’ve got a piece that perfectly blends farmhouse warmth with moody sophistication.

Wishing you many successful creative ventures and DIYs this Fall season! ✨💡🌾🖤
